  1.                    HOW THE KERATOMETER WORKS

  4. To measure the image size, which is 
  5. directly related to the corneal radius, 
  6. the prisms that form the left and top 
  7. images can be moved forward and back.   
  8. As the prisms move they increase or 
  9. decrease the separation of the 
  10. deviated image from the central image.  
  11. The examiner moves the prisms by 
  12. rotating the power drums.  When they 
  13. are moved to the point where the 
  14. sides of the images touch (plus signs 
  15. or minus signs overlap) the size of 
  16. the image is know and is converted 
  17. to a dioptric power by the markings 
  18. on the drum.
